Discovering Arthur Douglas (1860 - 1949)

The Joseph Driscoll Collection

August 1 - August 31, 2012

The Antiques Road Show has created a captive audience of collectors and entrepreneurs seeking to discover art treasures in auctions, yards sales and grandma’s attic. Joseph Driscoll, an Insurance Agent, attended a local auction on Westminster street was intrigued by a series of Arthur Douglas water color paintings and the road to discovery began.

Over the past 30 years he has put together a collection of 200 paintings by the artist, researched the artist, organized exhibits and had John Allen join him in creating a website to unfold the story of Arthur Douglas.

The current exhibit concentrates on unfolding the story of the Rhode Island painter Arthur Douglas and how he informs us about the Rhode Island art scene in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. What was life of a professional artist active in the state like? What were the highs and lows during the career of Arthur Douglas?
