Summer Tides

Summer / Fall 2014

The seashore is a sort of neutral ground, a most advantageous point from which to contemplate this world.

- Thoreau

Bert Gallery is featuring a varied selection of paintings celebrating the end of the summer season. In a rapidly fluctuating art world many artists escaped to the shade of the woods and shores to concentrate on their own artistic development and experiment with new art ideas. This was a restorative process leading to the production of many remarkable works of art. On view is a selection of thoughtful and accomplished paintings and etchings by artists of the late 19th and early 20th century.

There are many fine examples of early Newport scene painters such as Elijah Baxter (1849 - 1935) founder of the Newport Art Association and James Drummond Herbert (1898 - 1970). Also, there are many artists active from the 1940’s and 1950’s on view who transition from Magical Realism to the newest trends in European art. See works by Gordon Peers (1909 - 1988), Edgar Corbridge (1901 - 1988), and Louise Marianetti (1916 - 2009) capturing shore scenes and various ports of call from New England to Europe.

The exhibit hours are Wednesday through Friday, from 11 - 5pm and by appointment. Please call ahead, hours may vary.
